The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it had found the source of recent Salmonella poisoning: Moon Marine, a fish processor in Cupertino, California.
“We have traced the illness back to certain lots of tuna scrape from Moon Marine,†said Curtis Allen of the FDA.
“There could still be some out there, but we hope it won’t be out there for long,†he said.
The firm, Moon Marine USA Corp., is recalling 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna packaged as “Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA,†the Chicago Tribune reported.
The product, tuna scrape, is used in spicy tuna rolls and in sushi, sashimi or ceviche, the newspaper said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 81 percent of 116 patients with Salmonella Bareilly poisoning in recent months said they had eaten some form of raw fish within seven days of becoming sick.
The FDA warned anyone who may have become sick after eating Nakaochi Scrape to talk to a doctor.
