Ecuador’s Chamber Of Fishery Will Stay In Guayaquilff

29 October 2003 Ecuador

The Undersecretary's office of Fishing Resources of Ecuador will accept the disposition of the president of the Republic, Lucio Gutiérrez, to maintain the seat of the National Chamber of Fishery in Guayaquil.

Yesterday, Gutiérrez partially vetoed the regulation approved by Congress that considered the transfer of the seat of the organism to Manta, in the province of Manabí.

After reiterating that the presidential decision will be accepted, Lucia Fernandez, Undersecretary of Fishing Resources, clarified that at no moment did she interfere in this subject.

Lucia Fernandez has been an active and recognized tuna boat owner in Manta for many years.  Also, she indicated that the moment has arrived for uniting efforts with the objective of fortifying the fishing sector and moving the country forward.  "Between Manta and Guayaquil we can create the fishing power of South America and the world”.

”We must concentrate on what unites us, not what divides us ", she emphasized.  She explained that in order to reach this goal the creation of the Consultative Committee for Tuna will be created.

In the today’s atuna.com article : “What is Ecuador’s Most Important Tuna Port?”, you will read the arguments  that Mr. Cesar Rohón, president of the National Chamber of Fishery in Guayaquil,  raised to object the transfer of the seat and offices of his organization to Manta. This initial measure was issued under the responsibility of Lucia Fernandez, but has now been over-ruled by Ecuador ‘s president after a strong opposition by Mr. Cesar Rohón.

Mr. Rohon argues in the article “What is Ecuador’s Most important Tuna Port” that Guayaquil is of more importance to the country’s tuna and seafood business than is Manta. In the article he supports his arguments with interesting data on the country’s tuna business.
