The South Australian sardine industry is excited about the new season, with bigger fish already being caught.
The season started earlier this month, with nearly all of the vessels now at sea.
Executive officer of the State’s Sardine Industry Association Paul Watson says the boost coincides with increasing quotas to the tuna industry, which use sardines as feed.
Mr. Watson says the sardines caught so far are bigger than last year.
“Overall the kilo counts seem to be lower, which is what we are after,†he says.
“Obviously the less individual pieces to make up a kilo it means the overall average size is larger, so we are looking this year at seeing an improvement of 15 to 20 per cent with luck.â€
