In 2011, the Port of Vigo proves to be one of the main ports of the European Union by breaking the absolute record of fish movement, handling 834,647 tons. This represents 0.8 percent more than in 2010 (827,724 tons), according to data from the Vigo Port Authorities.
The past year’s major movement corresponds to fresh and frozen fish, which reached 776,320 tons, and an additional 58,327 tons of fish were canned.
Since last year, the fish traffic in general of the Port of Vigo was superior to all others individually. Similarly, in 2011, in the case of fresh fish, its economic value increased by 4.4 percent, reaching Euro 210.138.000.
The Port of Vigo becomes a world leader in handling fish, coming-in first in the ranking for unloadings of goods fit for human consumption. This sector employs more than 7,000 workers in direct jobs, one of the most important economic engines of Vigo and Galicia.
The Port Authority seeks to enhance collaborations in trade missions and trade fairs, as well as innovation projects in aquaculture, aiming at including the Port of Vigo as main intersection point within the list of the EU transport network.
