Australian Bluefin Wins Japanese Food Chain’s Praiseff

20 October 2003 Australia

Australian farmed tuna has passed one of the most intensive investigations of a food chain ever undertaken.

Two teams of up to 24 professional taste-testers in Japan have scrutinized 16 tuna fish from Port Lincoln in South Australia and declared it some of the world’s best.

Aquafin Cooperative Research Center spokesman Dr. Phil Thomas says the fish were also tested for color and biological make up before being sent to Japan.

"Within food analysis it’s probably pretty much a first as well because we basically followed the fish all of the way from Port Lincoln where they are produced right down to where they are basically consumed and used Japanese expertise to do the evaluation in Japan," Dr.  Thomas said.
