Pacific Nations Make Landmark Agreement On Southern Bluefin Tuna Catchff

10 October 2003 Australia

In what has been hailed as the most significant development for the Southern Bluefin Tuna industry in 10 years, all nations involved in fishing the species have agreed on a total allowable worldwide catch.

The decision sees New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, and Australia limited to 14,030 tons, with Australia keeping its individual limit of more than 5,000 tons.

The president of the Australian Tuna Boat Owners Association of Australia, Brian Jeffries, says the decision will bring stability and confidence to the industry.
