South Korea Harvests Tuna Eggs From Captive Fish

24 August 2015

South Korea has become the world’s third nation to successfully harvest fertilized eggs from captive bluefin tuna, the government has said this week.

Japan and Spain have also succeeded in the task, as both countries aim to ensure a sustainable supply of bluefin tuna for the future.

South Korea is already farming bluefin, but mostly with imported eggs or from young fish that were caught in the wild.

The Korean Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF) said that the successful development of a breeding program will ensure the stable supply of bluefin for the country and the rest of the world.

In a press release, they added: “If the country successfully supplies bluefin eggs to local farms, we may begin to see farmed bluefin tuna weighing over 30 kilograms on our dinner tables in 2018.”
