UK Company First To Launch Halal Tuna Cat Food 19 April 2024

A UK-based cat food company Huraya has launched three new flavors of halal products – tuna, ocean fish, and chicken. The tuna comes in 950 g pouches. The owner of the brand, Aihtsham Rashid who lives in Leeds, explained that he has been on the lookout to feed his cat halal food but could not find any brands. After three months of searching in vain, he decided to start his own cat food company this year as an extension of his dietary practices and religious beliefs. Rashid traveled to Malaysia, where they take halal pet food seriously, to learn more about it, reported news site PetFood Industry.

There has lately been a rise in the demand for halal tuna products in Islamic nations. It is not known whether Rashid plans to expand his brand to such nations. The Islamic form of slaughtering animals is called halal. Tuna is considered halal when it is taken out alive from the water by a human.

EU Lends A Helping Hand To Combat IUU Fishing In African Nations 18 April 2024

This week the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) launched the exchange program with five African nations to “enhance cooperation and promote the sharing of expertise and best practices in the fight against IUU fishing.” The EU has tuna fishing and trade deals with these countries – Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, and Tunisia — which are the participants of the program. The initiative is carried out under the E-FishMed project which was adopted in 2021 to fight IUU fishing and implement the ICCAT conservation and management measures. The exchange program is held in Madrid from April 15 to 19.

Fisheries inspectors and monitoring center operators of the African nations will visit the Spanish Fisheries Monitoring Center and participate in several sessions to get a detailed understanding of the topic and best practices. The participants will take part as observers in fishery inspection activities in Málaga. The E-FishMed project is supported by France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, and Spain. EFCA, based in Vigo, is an EU agency that coordinates the national operational activities in the area of fisheries and assists the member states in their application of the Common Fisheries Policy.
